Escribir Conjugation in Spanish and Examples

The Spanish verb escribir means to write. It is a regular -ir verb, so it follows the same conjugation pattern as verbs like vivir and abrir.

The tables below include the conjugations for escribir in the indicative mood (present, past, future), the subjunctive mood (present and past), the imperative mood (commands), as well as other verb forms such as the present and past participles.

Escribir Present Progressive/Gerund Form

In Spanish there are three types of regular verbs; they either end in -ar, -er, or -ir. The verb escribir is a regular -ir verb.

The present participle or gerund form of Spanish verbs is formed with the ending -ando (for -ar verbs) or -iendo (for -er and -ir verbs). One of the functions of the present participle is to form the present progressive, which is used to describe ongoing actions that are taking place in the present.

Present progressive of escribir: está escribiendo

She is writing -> Ella está escribiendo en el cuaderno.

Escribir Past Participle

Regular past participles are formed with the endings -ado (for -ar verbs) and -ido (for -er and -ir verbs). However, escribir has an irregular past participle—escrito. The past participle has several functions. One of them is to form compound tenses, such as the present perfect and the pluperfect.

Present perfect of escribir : ha escrito

she has written -> Ella ha escrito en el cuaderno.

Escribir Present Subjunctive

To conjugate the present subjunctive, start with the yo conjugation of the present tense (escribo), drop the o, and add the subjunctive ending, which for -er and -ir verbs is -a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an.

Que yo	escriba	That I write	Carlos espera que yo escriba con la mano derecha.
Que tú	escribas	That you write	Karina espera que tú escribas cartas para tu amigo.
Que usted/él/ella	escriba	That you/he/she write	Daniel espera que ella escriba en su diario todos los días.

Escribir Imperfect Subjunctive

There are two options for conjugating the imperfect subjunctive. Their uses vary depending on regional or stylistic differences, but both are perfectly acceptable.

Option 1

Que yo	escribiera	That I wrote	Carlos esperaba que yo escribiera con la mano derecha.
Que tú	escribieras	That you wrote	Karina esperaba que tú escribieras cartas para tu amigo.
Que usted/él/ella	escribiera	That you/he/she wrote	Daniel esperaba que ella escribiera en su diario todos los días.
Que nosotros	escribiéramos	That we wrote	Aurora esperaba que nosotros escribiéramos para el periódico.

Escribir Imperative

When you want to give a direct command, use the imperative form of the verb. As you can see below, the positive and negative commands are different for the tú and vosotros forms. There is no imperative for yo (the first person singular), él/ella, or ellos/ellas (the third person in both singular and plural).
