Every Superman Movie Actor Who Played on "Smallville"

How many actors from the Superman movies played on Smallville? The 2001 show Smallville starred Tom Welling as Clark Kent growing up in the mid-west town. Along the way, he met many people. Some were friends and some were enemies.

The producers are big fans of the Superman movies from the 70s and 80s and often cast familiar actors from the movies. Here are the 6 actors that appeared on the show.

Terence Stamp as Jor-El

Warner Bros
  • Originally Cast as General Zod in Superman (1978), Superman II (1980)

Terence Stamp played Superman’s arch-enemy Zod in Superman and Superman II. He was terrifying and marvelous. So it's ironic that he also played the voice of Clark’s biological father Jor-El on Smallville 25 years later.

Stamp's English accent and clear tones are amazing and Jor-El's voice is chilling when he wants it to be.

Margot Kidder as Bridgette Crosby

Warner Bros
  • Originally Cast as Lois Lane in Superman (1978), Superman II (1980) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)

Kidder played the firstly Lois Lane in the 70s and 80s in the Superman films. She was constantly by Superman's side. So it's fitting that Kidder plays the assistant to Dr. Swann who was played by Christopher Reeve.

She appeared in two episodes but refused to work on the show after Reeve's death. She felt that having her announce the death of Dr. Swann was “tacky”. Her character was killed off the show. Plus, she asked for too much money.

Annette O'Toole as Martha Kent

Warner Bros
  • Originally Cast as Lana Lang in Superman II (1980)

The mother of Superman demands a woman of compassion and strength. In 1983, O'Toole played the strong and compassionate single mother Lana Lang in Superman III. In 2001, 18 years later, she played Clark’s adoptive mother Martha Kent. She took over from Cynthia Ettinger in the pilot.

Not only did she play a mom but she also played a Senator. Not bad for a girl from Smallville.

Helen Slater as Lara-El

Warner Bros
  • Originally cast: Kara in Supergirl (1984)

To play Superman's mother, the show turned to none other than the beautiful Supergirl. Helen Slater played the Superman spin-off movie Supergirl in 1983. In 2007, 24 years later she played Clark's biological mom Lara in three episodes.

She's been cast as Kara’s adoptive mother on the new Supergirl, so it comes full circle.

Marc McClure as Dax-Ur

  • Originally cast: Kara in Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983), Supergirl (1984) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)

Marc McClure played Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen in the 70s and 80s. He played Jimmy in the Christopher Reeve movies as well as the spin-off Supergirl. In 2008,  30 years later, he returned to the world of Superman by playing the Kryptonian scientist Dax-Ur.

Christopher Reeve as Dr. Virgil Swann

Warner Bros
  • Originally Cast as Superman in Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)

Christopher Reeve played Superman in the films. After a tragic accident, he was paralyzed and became another kind of hero as a political activist. Reeve was a huge fan of the show. The producers created the role of Dr. Virgil Swann, who helps Clark learn more about his Kryptonian heritage. They felt Reeve would be perfect and described it as "passing of the torch" between the old and new actors.

They went to great lengths to make the filming easier for the actor. They filmed all the scenes in his home city of New York and tried to keep the scenes as short as possible. It turns out Reeve was such an amazing actor that actually pushed for more scenes and said it was a wonderful experience. "I thought it would be fun; it's a very welcome relief from politics and medical research,” Reeve said, “Butting heads with politicians and the whole establishment in terms of advancing medical research is a very difficult job, and time-consuming and energy-consuming, and this is a very welcome change of pace."

The show Smallville was a fitting homage to the original Superman film and used many of the same actors. It was fun to see and great to watch.
