First there was the classic Dragon Ball anime that started it all. Then the hugely popular Dragon Ball Z anime series which was followed by the controversial Dragon Ball GT. The world and characters were revisited recently in the two new animated films, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection “F” and now, almost 18 years after the final episode of Dragon Ball GT aired on television in Japan, a new Dragon Ball anime series has been announced; Dragon Ball Super!

Here’s everything you need to know.

When is Dragon Ball Super set?

Dragon Ball Super is set before the final three episodes of the Dragon Ball Z anime series and appears to be an alternate telling of the two movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection “F” with a heavy dose of extra story and character moments. It's unclear at this point if the storylines' conclusion will be the same as the movies or change dramatically.

What does the kanji mean in the Dragon Ball Super logo?

The kanji (Chinese character) in the Dragon Ball Super series title is the character, cho which is Japanese for super. This is a change from Dragon Ball Z, GT and even the movie, Resurrection “F” which feature English letters in their titles. It is worth mentioning that even though the Japanese word, cho is used, the English word, Super is written directly under it so the official Japanese series name can be either Dragon Ball Cho or Dragon Ball Super.

It really comes down to personal preference.

How many episodes are there in the Dragon Ball Super anime?

While there has been no official confirmation from the Japanese side, Toei Animation Europe’s website briefly listed 100 as being the full episode count before replacing the number with a double “x”.

Even if the number was true, there’s always the possibility that the series could continue beyond that if popular or spawn a spin-off series in a similar style to Dragon Ball Z from the original Dragon Ball.

What’s Dragon Ball Super about?

Little is known about the overall story beyond the time period in which it’s set (see above). The movie characters, Beerus and Whis have been confirmed to return and an official plot synopsis of the first episode reveals that the series starts with Goku working to earn money and Goten and Trunks going off in search of a present for Gohan’s wife-to-be, Videl. Where the story goes from there is anyone’s guess. Note: Check back soon as this page will be updated as more information is released.

Where can I watch the English version of Dragon Ball Super?

An English language version of Dragon Ball Super is all but confirmed with FUNimation being the likely candidates for the dub and eventual DVD and Blu-ray release.

Stay tuned.
