The Football Association Challenger Cup is an annual tournament for men's domestic football in England. First played at the end of the 1871-72 season, the tourney is the oldest football competition in the world, making the FA Cup the oldest prize.

The competition is open to any eligible English football team, including nearly 100 professional squads, as well as several hundred nonleague teams: In the 2016-2017 season, more than 700 teams competed to reach the final game that determines which team captures the much-sought-after prize.

Below is a list of cup winners throughout the decades.

1991-2016: Arsenal Dominates

During this period, Arsenal won the FA Cup eight times, including three out of four cups between 2014 and 2017, including a 1-0 win over Chelsea in 2017 to capture its record 14th cup. If the game is tied at the end of regulation, it is decided by penalty kicks during After Extra Time (AET), the British phrasing for overtime.

1965-1989: Manchester United's Era

British football power Manchester United didn't dominate in quite the way Arsenal did in later years, but the famed squad came close — playing in eight finals and winning five FA Cups.

1946-1964: WWII Intercedes

No team dominated during this period, though Tottenham Hotspur did win two consecutive FA Cups and in 1961 and 1962 and Newcastle United won three cups in six years. But the era was shortened because of World War II, and no FA Cup finals were played from 1940 until 1945, resuming only in 1946 after the Allies defeated the Axis powers.

1920-1939: The Years Between the Wars

Though no team dominated during this time period, the era was shortened because of another war, this time World War I.

There were no FA Cup finals from 1916 to 1919, but the competition resumed in 1920.

1872-1890: The Wanderers

A London squad named the Wanderers dominated the early cup years, winning five of the first seven FA Cups. Sadly, the club is long gone, having been disbanded in 1887, though several other English football clubs have adopted the name over the years. Interestingly, Oxford University fielded a team that made it to the final game four times in the early years, winning one FA Cup.
