The Fiesta Bowl is an annual bowl game that originated in 1971. It was one of the most popular and well-regarded bowl games in all of college football. The game is currently played at the University of Phoenix Stadium. From its origination in 1971 to 2006, the game was played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.

The Fiesta Bowl was a main member of the now defunct Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

It became a member of the BCS in 1998, and was the designee for the national championship game on a couple of occasions. In 2014, the Fiesta Bowl became a member of the College Football Playoff, which replaced the Bowl Championship Series.

The Fiesta Bowl served as the national championship game in 1999 and 2003. Penn State, Arizona State, Ohio State and Nebraska are all tied for the most Fiesta Bowl appearances with six. Oklahoma has appeared in five Fiesta Bowls.

History

For a major bowl game, the Fiesta Bowl has a surprisingly short history. The first edition of this game was played in 1971. It began as the result of the Western Athletic Conference’s attempt to obtain bowl invitations. The Fiesta Bowl initially provided an automatic berth for the Western Athletic Conference champion.
