Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on February 26, 2020 When you see a German word for a fish or marine species, how can you translate that to English or know the species? We don't list all 23,000 Fischarten here in our Lexikon, but you'll find more than in most fish glossaries. This annotated German-English Lexikon is in alphabetical order, by German name. There are an estimated 23,000 varieties of fish, of which about 40 percent live in the saltwater (Salzwasser) of the world's oceans and seas. The other 60 percent are freshwater (Süsswasser) varieties. Only a few types of fish, such as eel and salmon, can live in both fresh and saltwater.
