Since 1983, Bill and Phyllis Taylor of Taylor & Taylor have combined their architecture and interior design skills to build homes that express Florida style and the spirit and traditions of the sunshine state.

"Florida is not only a state - but a state of mind," say the the husband-and-wife team.

Architect William Taylor's modernist design for the Hammock House, shown here, is a good example of the firm's awareness of the local environment. Tropical hardwood hammocks are forests native to southern Florida and the Caribbean—the hammock is not the tree, like the Strangler Fig common to South Florida, but a canopy of trees on a raised island in a wetland area. Bill Taylor wraps the Hammock House around an island of tropical hardwoods.

"I always love to splay the wings of my homes whenever possible," says Taylor, "even on more regular rectangular lots. The effect creates multiple views instead of a single more static view." The modernist Hammock House spreads out, surrounding the natural centerpiece. Expansive windows meld interiors with exterior spaces.

Windemere Estate near Orlando, Florida

Unlike the modernist Hammock House, William Taylor's design for Windemere Estate near Orlando, Florida, is modeled after the state's Spanish roots. The front parapet and hipped roof are typical of Spanish Revival style architecture, yet Taylor included high oval windows, "inspired by the British Colonial style loved by our client," says Mr. Taylor. The interior designs by Phyllis Taylor celebrate that formal, British styling.

The 14,000 square feet of Windemere has three floors and a total of 23 rooms.

Phyllis Taylor designed the interior of Ibis House at the University of Miami to meet the needs of the University President. Rooms accommodate formal social gatherings, yet still convey a sense of intimacy. Vertical and horizontal patterns in greys and whites complement the curved outline of the architecture.

Sensitivity to the environment is a key tenant of Florida style. Ibis House was a LEED-Certified project. The interior design incorporates green design elements such as wall coverings made of grass cloth. Recycled aluminum in the dining room and kitchen are functional and earth-friendly.

This room is not your ordinary outdoor porch. No screens here—just flowing draperies to delineate the interior living area.

Located at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, this open-air retreat illustrates the core philosophies of Florida style. The outdoor room is featured on the cover of the Taylors' book, Classic Florida Style : The Houses of Taylor and Taylor.

" Whether it's the sunsets over Biscayne Bay that lend the vibrant colors to inform an entire design palate, or the blurred distinction between indoor and outdoor living, Classic Florida Style...represents the connection between the built environment and nature...."

With a wood shake roof and washed-ochre-colored stucco siding, Sunset House has a Spanish Revival flavor, but architect William Taylor's ranch-style design might be more appropriately called Neo-Mediterranean. The grand outdoor living area—an open-air porch, really—takes center-stage, making this home an ideal example of Florida style.
