How To Add A Grayscale Mask In Adobe Photoshop.

Image shows the mask layer and the image layer with the mask applied.
Adding a greyscale mask is a simple copy and paste operation.

Adding a grayscale mask to a Photoshop image is not as difficult as it first appears. Just keep in mind that grayscale images used as masks create transparency because the gray values determine alpha transparency with pure white showing the content and pure black hiding it. The values  in between are translated into opacity. So much for the tecchie talk.  here's how to use any image in this collection as a mask:

  1. Open your image to be masked and double click the background layer to unlock the layer.
  2. Open your mask.
  3. In the mask image switch to the Move tool, and click and drag the image onto to image to be masked. When you release the mouse, the mask should be over the image.
  4. Select the Layer containing the mask.
  5. Select Edit>Transform> Scale and resize the mask to fit the dimensions of the image or the area to be masked. Press Return/Enter when finished.
  6. Select the image layer and click the Mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel. You should see a white box to the right of the image.
  7. Select you mask layer, click on the image in the Mask layer to select it and copy it to the clipboard. Turn off the visibility of the mask layer.
  8. Select your image layer and Option/Alt click on the white mask area. The white screen that appears is the mask. Paste the contents of the clipboard into this image.
  9. Click the image icon in the layer and your mask appears.

The following pages contain the masks for download. Enjoy!
