So, you've decided that you want to try snowboarding. Now you're wondering, what gear do I need?

Here's a comprehensive list of all the things that you'll need for a comfortable day on the hill and some suggestions for optional items that you might want to consider as well.

Wearing the right clothing on the hill: it is important to make sure not only that you'll be warm but that you'll have layers you can strip off to stay comfortable if you're overdressed.

  • Thin cotton or polypro socks to wick moisture away from your feet
  • Thicker Smartwool® or other non-cotton socks (worn over the thin socks)
  • Long underwear (preferably moisture-wicking)
  • Long underwear is enough for most people, but if it's extremely cold or you're very sensitive to cold, you may want to wear a pair of loose pants (like jogging pants) over them
  • Tight-fitting long-sleeved long-underwear top (preferably moisture-wicking)
  • A medium-thickness fleece or wool sweater (if you don't have either of those, cotton will work)
  • A polyester or fleece beanie or toque (if you don't have one, just look for the warmest hat you can find)

  • A water-resistant ski or snowboarding jacket (if neither are available, a good winter jacket is the next best option)
  • Water-resistant ski or snowboarding pants (if neither are available, normal snow pants are the next best option)
  • Ski or snowboarding gloves or mittens
  • Snug-fitting snowboard boots (fit is very important to keep your feet warm and comfortable)
  • A snowboard with bindings
  • Goggles (if none are available, sunglasses are the next best thing)

Optional Suggestions

  • Helmet
  • Wrist guards
  • Knee pads
  • Butt pads
  • Neck gator (a fleece tube for your neck)
  • Hand warmers
  • Glove liners (or thin polyester gloves)
  • Headband (to cover your ears completely)
  • Stomp pad
  • Small backpack or sling bag
  • Camera to capture the good times. Just make sure you won't fall on it.
  • Sunblock
