Downtown Baltimore is just eight miles away. Founded in 1885 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, as "Women's College of Baltimore City". It was renamed in 1910, and became co-educational in the 1980s. The college recently opened its $48 million Athenaeum, the new center of student life that houses classrooms, an art gallery, a radio station, a café, a library, and meeting and exercise spaces. With a 10 to 1 student / faculty ratio, Goucher prides itself on the close interaction between faculty and students. The college offers 31 undergraduate majors. For its strong programs in the liberal arts and sciences, Goucher was awarded a chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. On the athletic front, the Goucher College Gophers compete in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division III, within the Landmark Conference.
