Express Gratitude on Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is an annual festival celebrated across America, and in many parts of the world. It is a day of feasting and merriment, as families enjoy a hearty meal of corn, turkey, pies, potatoes, and cranberry. A famous Thanksgiving quote by German theologian and mystic, Meister Eckhart, captures the spirit of the day, "If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, 'thank you,' that would suffice."
Fred De Witt Van Amburgh
None is more impoverished than the one who has no gratitude. Gratitude is a currency that we can mint for ourselves, and spend without fear of bankruptcy.

Gratitude is an art of painting an adversity into a lovely picture.

Frank A. Clark
If a fellow isn't thankful for what he's got, he isn't likely to be thankful for what he's going to get.

Michael Dresser
Thanksgiving is America's national chow-down feast, the one occasion each year when gluttony becomes a patriotic duty.

W. J. Cameron
Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action.
History of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving was originally dedicated to giving thanks for a bountiful autumn harvest. American settlers from England and other parts of the continent brought similar traditions to the new land. However, the modern version of the Thanksgiving holiday was allegedly born at Plymouth in 1621, when a grand feast was organized to celebrate the abundant harvest. Thanksgiving became an annual affair only in the late 1660s.

How Thanksgiving Became an Annual Holiday
Though Thanksgiving was observed in the United States as early as the 17th century, the first truly national Thanksgiving holiday was observed in the year 1863. President Abraham Lincoln established the annual Thanksgiving date as the final Thursday of November, in a bid to promote unity between the Northern and Southern states. Nearly a century later, on 26 December 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the date to the fourth Thursday of November.
The annual festival then became a national holiday.

But see, in our open clearings, how golden the melons lie;
Enrich them with sweets and spices, and give us the pumpkin-pie!

Ted Allen
The funny thing about Thanksgiving, or any huge meal, is that you spend 12 hours shopping for it and then chopping and cooking and braising and blanching. Then it takes 20 minutes to eat it and everybody sort of sits around in a food coma, and then it takes four hours to clean it up.

P. J. O'Rourke
Thanksgiving is so called because we are all so thankful that it only comes once a year.

Robert Caspar Lintner
Thanksgiving was never meant to be shut up in a single day.

Thomas Fuller
Blessings are oftentimes not valued till they are gone.

And though I ebb in worth, I'll flow in thanks.

Would you look at all this food! Do you know how many needy families it could have fed on Thanksgiving? Ooh, crab puffs!

Jim Rohn
There is no better opportunity to receive more than to be thankful for what you already have. Thanksgiving opens the windows of opportunity for ideas to flow your way.
Thanksgiving Traditions and Customs
People follow many customs and traditions on Thanksgiving. The most popular Thanksgiving tradition is roasting turkey for the Thanksgiving meal. The roast turkey takes the center stage, as families get together for an elaborate Thanksgiving meal that includes mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, cranberry sauce, squash, and other vegetables. The Thanksgiving dinner is a big family affair; people travel long distances just to be with their family during Thanksgiving.

Many American families also invite friends, to join the Thanksgiving celebration, thereby making this holiday an inclusive celebration. As family and friends gather around the dinner table, everyone says a small prayer of thanks, expressing gratitude for the blessings they received, and sharing their happiness with others.

Each year, on Thanksgiving, the President of the United States performs a thanksgiving tradition of pardoning the National Thanksgiving turkey, allowing it to live the rest of its life in peace. This tradition was first officiated in 1989, and it is observed every year at the White House.

Thanksgiving. It's like we didn't even try to come up with a tradition. The tradition is, we overeat. "Hey, how about at Thanksgiving we just eat a lot?" "But we do that every day!" "Oh. What if we eat a lot with people that annoy the hell out of us?"

Wilbur D. Nesbit
Forever on Thanksgiving Day
The heart will find the pathway home.

Augusten Burroughs, You Better Not Cry: Stories for Christmas
Thanksgiving was nothing more than a pilgrim-created obstacle in the way of Christmas; a dead bird in the street that forced a brief detour.”

Johannes A. Gaertner
To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.
Why Is Thanksgiving So Special?
The tradition of Thanksgiving is essentially an occasion to say " thank you". We teach our children the values of gratitude, humility, and appreciation. Yet, most of us use the words " thank you" as a matter of courtesy; we never fully appreciate the blessings we receive. A particularly apt quotation by American composer and lyricist Irving Berlin goes, "Got no check books, got no banks. Still I'd like to express my thanks -- I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night." Thanksgiving offers people a chance to express their gratitude.

Thanksgiving Is a Chance to Renew Your Faith
Life is often unfair. It deals you hard knocks when you are least prepared. However, beautiful Thanksgiving sermons at church remind you that grey clouds have a silver lining. A popular quote by Henry Jacobson never fails to fill me with hope. Jacobson said, "Praise God even when you don’t understand what He is doing." On Thanksgiving, say a prayer of thanks to the Almighty for the bounties that you have received.

Express Your Gratefulness Even in Times of Trouble
One often becomes disgruntled during periods of hardship. At such times, it is difficult to look on the bright side. But you can gain inspiration from poet, educator and clergyman Henry Van Dyke. Van Dyke said, "Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love, and to work, and to play and to look up at the stars."
Ida S. Taylor
