Discussion of Guildord College's Admissions Standards: Over a third of applicants to Guilford College will not be admitted, and successful students will need to have a solid academic record. In the scattergram above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of admitted applicants had high school averages of "B" or higher, combined SAT scores of 1000 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 20 or better. Note that Guilford has test-optional admissions, so your grades are going to matter much more than standardized test scores. You'll notice a few red dots (rejected students) mixed in with the green and blue of the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that were on target for Guilford were rejected. You'll also notice that a couple students were admitted with test scores and grades below the norm. This is because Guilford's admissions process is holistic. The admissions folks will want to see that you have taken rigorous high school courses, not courses that get you an easy "A." The school uses the Common Application, and they will be looking for a winning essay, interesting extracurricular activities, and strong letters of recommendation. Students who do not submit standardized test scores will also need to submit a portfolio of written work including a graded writing sample. In general, the college is looking for students who will contribute to the campus community in meaningful ways.
