Childhood Stories of Guru Nanak and Miraculous Events

Guru Nanak lived in the village of Talwandi as a child where he had the responsibility to attend to his family's live stock while they grazed. A number miraculous events occurred as the young herdboy passed his time deep in meditation.

One day as the cattle grazed Guru Nanak entered into a sleep like state of very deep meditation. Meanwhile the animals wandered into a neighbor's field where they chewed and trampled the crops. The furious neighbor called the village headman. Guru Nanak's father became irate and began beating and berating the boy.

One day while making his rounds, the village headman Rai Bullar rode his horse by the pasture where Guru Nanak grazed his father's herd of cattle. The headman became very frightened when he noticed a cobra hovering over Guru Nanak, as the lad lay sleeping in the grass under the hot sun.

While out riding one morning, Rai Bullar passed by Guru Nanak sitting beneath the shade of a Jal tree while watching his cattle grazing. Later that afternoon, as he rode by on his return the headman noticed something very peculiar about the shadow cast by the tree.

The ancient village of Talwandi where Guru Nanak grew up in the Punjab is known as modern day Nanakana Sahib, of Pakistan. Annual full moon religious festivals celebrate the Guru Nanak's birth. Several historic gurdwaras and shrines commemorate the miraculous events of Guru Nanak's childhood.

Guru Nanak's birth is a festive occasion commemorated and celebrated during Pooran mashi the full fall harvest moon. Celebrations include worship at Nankana Sahib gurdwaras, kirtan programs, parading through the streets, and fireworks.
