Katelyn Michelle Ohashi was born April 12, 1997 in Seattle, Washington, to Richard and Diana Ohashi. She was the 2011 US junior national champion and the 2013 American Cup champion. Now she's a star for the UCLA Bruins in collegiate gymnastics.

Ohashi trained as an elite at WOGA in Plano, Texas and was coached by Valeri Liukin (coach and father of 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin).

Katelyn Ohashi Was an Outstanding Junior Gymnast

Ohashi racked up a long list of accomplishments in her junior career.

She dominated the 2011 US nationals, winning the bars, beam, and floor — and besting future 2012 Olympian Kyla Ross in the all-around. Ohashi picked up two more national titles on bars in 2010 and 2012 as well.

She also won five golds (team, all-around, bars, beam, and floor) at the 2012 Pacific Rim Championships, an international meet where she was clearly the top junior competing.

She Used Some Very Hard Skills as an Elite

Ohashi had one of the most difficult beam routines in the world — even scoring above 16.0 on it at the 2011 US nationals. (For reference, although scoring is not necessarily consistent from meet to meet, Chinese gymnast Deng Linlin won the 2012 Olympic beam title with a 15.6).

Ohashi has competed a standing Arabian to back handspring (at :22) a and a piked full-in dismount. She performs with clean form as well, making her crazy-hard skills all the more impressive.

On bars she has done an el-grip endo to a very high Jaeger (at :38) and a tucked double-double dismount

Ohashi has tumbled a back 1.5 to immediate front double full (at :43) and piked full-in (at 1:27) and vaulted a Yurchenko double full.

Katelyn Ohashi Had an Auspicious Senior Debut

Because of her long list of junior accolades, Ohashi was expected to be one of the new stars for the US team as a senior.

She competed in her first meet as a senior at the 2013 American Cup — and won the all-around and beam, and placed second on vault and bars. She bested eventual three-time world champion Simone Biles at that meet.

Injuries Slowed Her Down

Ohashi was dogged by injuries, especially in her shoulders, after that American Cup competition, and eventually opted to retire from elite gymnastics. She competed a few meets as a level 10 Junior Olympic competitor but was never able to compete again at high-caliber elite meet.

She's a Top NCAA Gymnast

Ohashi enrolled at UCLA in the fall of 2015 and quickly became one of the best gymnasts on the team. She helped the eighth-ranked Bruins place fifth at the 2016 NCAA Championships, scoring a clutch 9.900 on beam in the Super Six team finals. She competed on all four events at various times throughout the season, never scoring lower than a 9.800 on beam.

She also proved she may be one of the toughest gymnasts in the sport. Ohashi had a very scary fall on her dismount in the third meet of the season, but when the fall was attributed to equipment failure, she was given the option to perform the routine again. She said yes, and even did the same round-off double pike dismount — and nailed it all.
