Think of Halloween and your mind conjures images of ghosts, vampires, witches and monsters. Our modern versions of them have largely been crafted by popular literature and, more influentially, the movies. But like many fantastic characters of myth and lore, they have a basis in reality. Sometimes the true stories of these creatures that haunt our imaginations are just as weird and amazing as their fictional incarnations.

Halloween Ghoul

This photo was taken on Halloween night, 1998 at a friend's house who puts on a show every year. Look to the right of the prop "monk," behind the white fence and under the tree branches. I don't recall seeing anybody dressed in a "ghoul mask." The host of this show also did not see anyone in a ghoul costume. It's probably someone in a costume, but who knows?

This picture of my three-year-old son was taken on Oct 27, 2000. You can make out an apparition in this picture. It was taken at about 4:30 p.m. We were on our way to a children's Halloween party.
