Hanuman, the mighty mythical ape that aided Lord Rama in his expedition against the evil forces of Ravana, is one of the most loved idols in the Hindu pantheon. In some later texts, he is presented as an incarnation of Shiva.

A chalisa is a "forty verse" prayers, with lyrics that aimed at praise and devotion to various Vedic characters and deities. They are recited or chanted repeatedly to help devotees meditate on righteous and noble quantities.

An aarti song is one sung during the practice of aarti-- a religious ritual of worship in which light from a butter or camphor lamp is offered to a deity or group of deities. The songs that follow include both chalisas and aartis dedicated to Hanuman.
