Harry Truman (1884-1972) was a self-made man. He started out with a job to help his parents make ends meet before entering World War I. After the war, he owned a hat shop and got involved in local politics in Missouri. He quickly rose through the ranks of Democratic hopefuls before finally being nominated as President Franklin Roosevelt's Vice President.
