Opals and Superstition

Folklore surrounding this particular stone warns to take special care of this stone. Bad luck to follow if your opal is damaged or lost. Some people believe opals are unlucky in general.... so, beware! But, I have worn an opal ring on my pinky for over thirty years without issue.

It went missing for two years... eventually found by my son after I thought it was a lost cause. It was hiding inside a cardboard box where the Christmas decorations were stored in our attic. At around age 8 he showed me what he had found, asking me if it was okay if he gave to his girlfriend. Whoa! I didn't even know he had a girlfriend. What would have been bad luck is if he had given it to the girl. They broke up a couple of weeks later like most grade school romances.

Gemstone sellers will (or should!) warn buyers of the fragility of this stone. The shine or polish or your opal is at risk of the earth elements. Do not wear your grandmother's opal ring when gardening or at the beach. Dirt and sand granules can dull its sheen, or even scratch it. Also, it does not like extreme temperatures, cold or heat. Kept in a glass display case under a heated lamp could cause a crack.

Because there are so many different types of opals, it is best to ask about special care at the time of purchase.

Suggested Ways to Use Opals for Healing
from our readers

Sacred Stone of the Cherokee People - Opal is mainly made of hydrous silica sometimes with iron and aluminum.

it also can be up to 10 percent water. It can be found fairy easily in the Western United States and in Mexico. It is considered to be one of the seven sacred stones of the Cherokee people. it depends upon what kind of opal you have what it can do: white opal, sunflower opal, black opal, boulder opal, Sonoma opal, sun opal, mountain opal, jelly opal, Mexican opal, fire opal, cacholong opal, or Califoria opal. Each work differently. White opal is much like caffeine. It brings a great deal of energy to your body and helps you get more done. It charges you so to speak, makes you more productive. White opal works mainly on the physical body but also the mind as it makes you want to do more as well as have the energy to do things. ~Whitehorse Woman

Opal Carries Moon and Sun Energies - Opals are formed from balls of silica.

This silica has different levels of depth and density and holds water as well. That is where the "rainbow" colors come from. The opal is used for helping one that doesn't want to appear in the front or allows you to "fade into the background." Or to be less noticed. A stone of happy dreams and good changes. The opal can be used to help one open their "mystical" side. Gives you understanding of the Higher Powers. This stone carries both the sun and moon's energy. It is basically a moon's stone or female energy but has its flash of male energy in the iridescent colors and carries the sun's energy. These flashes encourage intuition and insight. These flashes also represent an "inner fire" that gently stimulates you towards the Spiritual realms. Can be used during astral travel but is NOT a powerful stone for astral travel, the energies are mor subtle. Opals should be moistened often by a natural oil or water. If all the water evaporates out of the stone it will become fragile and break. The opal is tied to our emotional side. Brings clarity by amplifying and mirroring feelings. Brings buried emotions to the surface so they can be dealt with. Helps a person to "loosen up" and become more spontanous. If this stone is not used for the good of all, it will backfire on you. This stone works best with a water cleansing. ~Stones77
