The high jump was a part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and has never left the Olympic program. But in all that time, no man has won more than a single Olympic high jump gold medal. Four jumpers have earned a gold and a silver medal: Great Britain's Con Leahy in 1906 (the Intercalated Games) and 1908; Poland's Jacek Wszola in 1976-80; Valeriy Brumel of the Soviet Union in 1960-64; and Cuba's Javier Sotomayor in 1992 and 2000.

Sweden's Patrik Sjoberg gained three Olympic high jump medals, taking the 1984 silver, the 1988 bronze and then earning a second silver medal in 1988. The 1980 gold medalist, Gerd Wessig of East Germany, is the only man to ever set a high jump world record during the Olympic Games.
