Discussion of Hobart and William Smith Colleges's Admissions Standards:

Hobart and William Smith Colleges have selective admissions, and roughly half of all applicants will not get in. Successful applicants tend to have grades and standardized test scores that are above average. In the graph above, the blue and green data points represent students who were accepted. Most had SAT scores (RW+M) of 1050 or higher, an ACT composite of 21 or higher, and a high school average of a "B+" or better. Don't worry if your standardized test scores are below these ranges--Hobart and William Smith has been test-optional since 2006. Grades, however, are extremely important, and you can see that a great number of admitted students had high school averages up in the "A" range.

Hobart and William Smith has holistic admissions and makes an effort to get to know you as a whole person rather than relying entirely on numerical data. To quote the Hobart and William Smith admissions website, "Our admissions process has always relied most heavily on a student’s high school transcript, including grade performance and rigor of courses selected, with significant consideration given to the recommendations, essay, extracurricular activities, community involvement and the admissions interview." The college is a member of the Common Application, so you'll want to make sure you have a strong application essay, meaningful extracurricular activities, and positive letters of recommendation. Like all selective colleges, the rigor of your high school courses, not just your grades, is important, so those AP, IB, Honors, and Dual Enrollment courses can all play in your favor. Finally, you can further strengthen your application by doing an optional interview (something that the college "highly encourages" all applicants to do).
