Cut the top and shape the pumpkin bowl in one easy step. First take a good look at the pumpkin and its vertical ridges. Decide how high you want the peak of the flutes, or tip of lotus petals, and where you want them centered. It's a good idea to place the cuts between the ridges |/|\|/|\| ( see illustration). You can use a marker to outline your cuts, but be careful to cut away any markings. Hold knife or pumpkin carving tool so the blade or cutting surface is nearly vertical about 60 degrees with the point down. Make slightly rounded tapered /\/\/\ diagonal slices down on either side of ridge from the highest point to the lowest point. Work your way around the pumpkin until the last cut lines up with the first cut.
