Question: How Do I Return to the LDS Church?

"A few years ago I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was baptized and received the gift of the Holy Ghost. Later I left the Church and joined another church. Lately I have been thinking about trying to go back to the LDS Church. What would it take? Would I have to be rebaptized? What would the process be?"

Answer:

If you did not request to have your name removed from the Church's records or you were not excommunicated (which you would have been notified about and which I doubt was done), then you would not have to be rebaptized.

All you would have to do is start coming back to church.

Even if you were baptized in another church that baptism would not matter because a baptism must be performed with the proper priesthood authority, which has only been restored to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Contact and Visit With Your Local Church Leader

I would recommend visiting with your bishop/branch president to share your feelings and concerns with him regarding coming back to church. If there is anything important you need to share with your authorized priesthood leader, or anything you need to repent of, he will openly listen to you and help you return to full activity in the Church.

Not Sure Who Your Local Leader is or Where to Worship?

If you are not sure who your bishop is or where you are assigned to attend, visit the maps website. Enter you residential address and it will tell you what you need to know.

It will also provide you with a map of where the meetinghouse is and directions on how to get there.

Getting Digital Can Be a First Step Also!

If you happen to have your Membership Record Number (MRN), this will help church leaders find your records. It will also help you transition back into the church by allowing you to access all the digital resources that are part of LDS.org Tools including the Directory.

All you have to do is set up an LDS Account or add your MRN to your existing LDS Account. If you already have your LDS Account set up with your MSN then simply look in the right hand corner of the Church's website and click on "My Account and Ward."

These LDS.org Tools include the following:

  • Online directories for the ward and stake
  • Unit calendars for the ward and stake
  • Online newsletter for the ward and stake
  • Digital lesson schedules for the ward

Specialized Guidance for the Returning Member

Regardless of how long you have been away, if you are going to come back you should start by studying scriptures, fasting and praying. Here are resources to help you:

If personal conflicts with local leaders or other members figured into your leaving the Church, the following resources may help you:

It is Never Too Late!

It is never a problem to come back to church; because the Lord's arms are always open- ALWAYS! In this imperfect world there are people who are not understanding or who may say/do things that are hurtful.

Remember that they are human and that only Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, are perfect and they love you perfectly.

I would highly suggest praying for the courage and strength to start coming back to church; especially as Satan will try to stop you from doing what you feel and know is right. Move forward with faith, Heavenly Father will be with you.
