2009 Hyundai Equus

This is the Equus, a large luxury sedan that Hyundai sells in its home market of South Korea. The Equus is based on a stretched version of the Hyundai Genesis sedan. Amenities include four-zone climate control, heating and cooling for all four seats, and a small refrigerator in the back seat console, and the right-rear seat reclines like a La-Z-Boy. Up front, the driver enjoys active cruise control, a lane departure warning system, parking cameras, and an air-sprung suspension. Hyundai is considering bringing the Equus to the United States. Click the thumbnails for larger photos and more details.

Equus is based on the Hyundai Genesis sedan, but while the shape is familiar, the details are different -- note the unique front fascia and curved crease at the back of the rear door.

Equus from the rear. "VS460" label denotes the 4.6 liter engine... and looks a lot like LS460 at first glance.

While most Hyundais are badged with the circle-H logo, Equus gets a unique silver-wing motif. Whether this huge hood ornament will appear on the US-market version has yet to be determined.

Equus' interior manages to mimic Lexus in the same way that lesser Hyundais mimic Toyota. Note the silver wing logo on the steering wheel.

Compared to cars like the BMW 7-series and Mercedes S-Class, the Equus' dashboard is refreshingly simple.

Equus' dash features leather up top, wood in the middle, plastic at the bottom, similar to the entry-level Genesis V6. One would hope that Hyundai would fit the Equus with the leather-covered dash found in the Genesis V8.

Front seats are leather upholstered and power adjustable; they're also heated and cooled. "EQUUS" is embroidered into the seat back.

Back seat

Equus' back seat is built for two; center console contains a small fridge as well as climate and stereo controls. Rear seat features more legroom than a Genesis Sedan, but not as much as long-wheelbase German sedans like the BMW 750Li and Audi A8L.

Chairman's Seat

Right-rear seat reclines La-Z-Boy style; front seat moves forward to provide the necessary legroom. A couple of Hyundai employees I talked to referred to it as the "Chairman's Seat".

Rear seat control panel features stereo, climate and seat adjustment controls; note that both rear seats are heated and cooled. I was so comfortable, I forgot to move my lens cap before snapping this picture.

Though most of the Equus' amenities are reserved for the right-rear seat, both rear seats get an illuminated visor mirror.

Driver's switch panel

Switch panel to left of steering column shows off some of the Equus' technology: Parking assistance, stability control, Active Front Lighting System (headlights that turn with the steering wheel), Vehicle Stability Management (which incorporates the Equus' lane departure warning system, dynamic cruise control, and Pre-Safety System, which sounds a warning and tightens the seat belts if a collision is imminent). Panel below houses electric parking brake. My guess is that Auto Hold holds the brakes when the car is stopped, allowing the driver to take his foot off the pedal -- several German manufacturers offer a similar system.

Six-speed automatic features a manual-shift funciton. Switchgear around the shifter shows off more Equus features. Left side: Driver's seat heating and cooling, forward parking camera, rear sun screen raise/lower. Right side: Passenger's seat heating and cooling, air suspension ride height, suspension sport mode. Dial below shifter controls navigation, phone, stereo, etc., similar to BMW's iDrive and Audi's MMI.

Trunk appears similar in size to that of the Genesis -- a bit small for a car this big. Trunk lid opens and closes electrically.
