Discussion of Illinois Wesleyan University's Admissions Standards:

Over a third of all applicants to Illinois Wesleyan University will not get in, and successful applicants typically have grades and standardized test scores that are well above average. In the scattergram above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that most successful applicants had grade point averages of B+ or higher, SAT scores over 1100 (RW+M), and ACT composite scores of 23 or higher. The majority of admitted students had grades up in the "A" range.

In the middle of the graph you'll see that the red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) overlap with admitted students. Some students who seemed to be on target for admission to Illinois Wesleyan did not get in. On the flip side, a few students with scores and grades below the norm were admitted. This seeming discrepancy is because Illinois Wesleyan University has holistic admissions and evaluates much more than numerical data. Whether applicants use the Common Application or the university's own application, the folks in the admissions office will be looking for students who will bring more than good grades and standardized test scores to their campus. Strong letters of recommendation, an engaging personal statement, and participation in meaningful extracurricular activities are all important components of a winning application. Also, some programs in the fine arts and performing arts require an audition or portfolio.
