Here is a list of some of the most important English vocabulary items for the information technology industry. This selection of vocabulary is based on the Occupational Handbook provided by the United States Department of Labor. This list is by no means complete. However, it provides a good starting point to further explore vocabulary you'll use in the industry. Improving Your Vocabulary Tips

  • Review each word in the list. Do you know it's meaning? If not, look it up in the dictionary!
  • Use each word in a sentence. Using the word when both speaking and writing will help you remember new words. 
  • Use the words to describe your job, or working in the information technology profession in general. How specific can you be? Which words do you need beyond this list? Make sure to keep track!
  • Learn synonyms and antonyms by using an online thesaurus to further extend your information technology. 
  • Use a visual dictionary which will help you learn the names of specific equipment used in the industry. 
  • Listen to co-workers and note how they use these words. Ask co-workers about new words when you're not sure.  
  • Ask co-workers questions about how new words are used at work. 
  • Search online for information about information technology. Listen to podcasts on the subject, read a blog about agriculture. Keep informed in English and your knowledge of related vocabulary will grow quickly.
