The Spanish verb iniciar is a cognate of the English verb to initiate, but it is more commonly translated to English as to start, to begin, or to commence. There are other verbs in Spanish that mean "to begin", such as comenzar and empezar. Iniciar is often used in more formal contexts than the other verbs that mean "to begin."

Iniciar is a regular -ar verb, so it is conjugated with the same pattern as other regular -ar verbs such as estudiar and cambiar. In this article, you can find the conjugations of iniciar in the indicative mood (present, past, and future), the subjunctive mood (present and past), the imperative mood, and other verb forms.

Present Indicative

Yo inicio Yo inicio la carrera en esta calle. I start the race on this street.
Tú inicias Tú inicias la reunión a tiempo. You start the meeting on time.
Usted/él/ella inicia Ella inicia el festival con un discurso. She starts the festival with a speech.
Nosotros iniciamos Nosotros iniciamos una huelga en el trabajo. We begin a strike at work.
Vosotros iniciáis Vosotros iniciáis el proyecto de la escuela muy tarde. You start the school project too late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas inician Ellas inician la construcción del edificio.  They begin construction of the building.

Preterite Indicative

Yo inicié Yo inicié la carrera en esta calle. I started the race on this street.
Tú iniciaste Tú iniciaste la reunión a tiempo. You started the meeting on time.
Usted/él/ella inició Ella inició el festival con un discurso. She started the festival with a speech.
Nosotros iniciamos Nosotros iniciamos una huelga en el trabajo. We began a strike at work.
Vosotros iniciasteis Vosotros iniciasteis el proyecto de la escuela muy tarde. You started the school project too late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas iniciaron Ellas iniciaron la construcción del edificio.  They began construction of the building.

Imperfect Indicative

The imperfect tense is usually translated to English as "was starting" or "used to start."

Yo iniciaba Yo iniciaba la carrera en esta calle. I used to start the race on this street.
Tú iniciabas Tú iniciabas la reunión a tiempo. You used to start the meeting on time.
Usted/él/ella iniciaba Ella iniciaba el festival con un discurso. She used to start the festival with a speech.
Nosotros iniciábamos Nosotros iniciábamos una huelga en el trabajo. We used to start a strike at work.
Vosotros iniciabais Vosotros iniciabais el proyecto de la escuela muy tarde. You used to start the school project too late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas iniciaban Ellas iniciaban la construcción del edificio.  They used to begin construction of the building.

Future Indicative

Yo iniciaré Yo iniciaré la carrera en esta calle. I will start the race on this street.
Tú iniciarás Tú iniciarás la reunión a tiempo. You will start the meeting on time.
Usted/él/ella iniciará Ella iniciará el festival con un discurso. She will start the festival with a speech.
Nosotros iniciaremos Nosotros iniciaremos una huelga en el trabajo. We will start a strike at work.
Vosotros iniciaréis Vosotros iniciaréis el proyecto de la escuela muy tarde. You will start the school project too late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas iniciarán Ellas iniciarán la construcción del edificio.  They will begin construction of the building.

Periphrastic Future Indicative 

To form the periphrastic future you need the present tense conjugation of the verb ir (to go), plus the preposition a, and the infinitive verb iniciar.

Yo voy a iniciar Yo voy a iniciar la carrera en esta calle. I am going to start the race on this street.
Tú vas a iniciar Tú vas a iniciar la reunión a tiempo. You are going to start the meeting on time.
Usted/él/ella va a iniciar Ella va a iniciar el festival con un discurso. She is going to start the festival with a speech.
Nosotros vamos a iniciar Nosotros vamos a iniciar una huelga en el trabajo. We are going to start a strike at work.
Vosotros vais a iniciar Vosotros vais a iniciar el proyecto de la escuela muy tarde. You are going to start the school project too late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas van a iniciar Ellas van a iniciar la construcción del edificio.  They are going to begin construction of the building.

Present Progressive/Gerund Form

The gerund or present participle can be used to form progressive tenses like the present progressive.

Present Progressive of Iniciar está iniciando Ella está iniciando el festival con un discurso. She is starting the festival with a speech.

Past Participle

The past participle can be used as an adjective or to form perfect tenses such as the present perfect.

Present Perfect of Iniciar ha iniciado Ella ha iniciado el festival con un discurso. She has started the festival with a speech.

Conditional Indicative

Yo iniciaría Yo iniciaría la carrera en esta calle si fuera mi decisión. I would start the race on this street if it were my decision.
Tú iniciarías Tú iniciarías la reunión a tiempo si pudieras. You would start the meeting on time if you could.
Usted/él/ella iniciaría Ella iniciaría el festival con un discurso si la dejaran. She would start the festival with a speech if they let her.
Nosotros iniciaríamos Nosotros iniciaríamos una huelga en el trabajo si fuera necesario. We would start a strike at work if it were necessary.
Vosotros iniciaríais Vosotros iniciaríais el proyecto de la escuela muy tarde, pero preferís ser responsables. You would start the school project too late, but you prefer to be responsible.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas iniciarían Ellas iniciarían la construcción del edificio si tuvieran el dinero.  They would begin construction of the building if they had the money.

Present Subjunctive

Que yo inicie Mi entrenador quiere que yo inicie la carrera en esa calle. My coach wants me to start the race on that street.
Que tú inicies Tu jefe espera que tú inicies la reunión a tiempo. Your boss hopes that you start the meeting on time.
Que usted/él/ella inicie El alcalde recomienda que ella inicie el festival con un discurso. The mayor recommends that she start the festival with a speech.
Que nosotros iniciemos El trabajador espera que nosotros iniciemos una huelga en el trabajo. The worker hopes that we begin a strike at work.
Que vosotros iniciéis La maestra no quiere que vosotros iniciéis el proyecto de la escuela muy tarde. The teacher doesn't want you to start the school project too late.
Que ustedes/ellos/ellas inicien El arquitecto espera que ellos inicien la construcción del edificio.  The architect hopes that they begin construction of the building.

Imperfect Subjunctive

Below are two different options for conjugating the imperfect subjunctive.

Option 1

Que yo iniciara Mi entrenador quería que yo iniciara la carrera en esa calle. My coach wanted me to start the race on that street.
Que tú iniciaras Tu jefe esperaba que tú iniciaras la reunión a tiempo. Your boss hoped that you would start the meeting on time.
Que usted/él/ella iniciara El alcalde recomendó que ella iniciara el festival con un discurso. The mayor recommended that she start the festival with a speech.
Que nosotros iniciáramos El trabajador esperaba que nosotros iniciáramos una huelga en el trabajo. The worker hoped that we would begin a strike at work.
Que vosotros iniciarais La maestra no quería que vosotros iniciarais el proyecto de la escuela muy tarde. The teacher didn't want you to start the school project too late.
Que ustedes/ellos/ellas iniciaran El arquitecto esperaba que ellos iniciaran la construcción del edificio.  The architect hoped that they would begin construction of the building.

Option 2

Positive Commands

Tú inicia ¡Inicia la reunión a tiempo! Start the meeting on time!
Usted inicie ¡Inicie el festival con un discurso! Start the festival with a speech!
Nosotros iniciemos ¡Iniciemos una huelga en el trabajo! Let's begin a strike at work!
Vosotros iniciad ¡Iniciad el proyecto de la escuela! Start the school project!
Ustedes inicien ¡Inicien la construcción del edificio! Begin construction of the building!
