Young children are very curious learners; they are open to new experiences especially if it's presented in an appealing manner. Parents and teachers often use fun and creative ways of teaching music to young children. You really don't need a lot of money to do this, all you need is creativity and imagination. Here are 5 simple ways of introducing musical instruments to young kids:

  • A great way to introduce instruments to young children and teach musical concepts (i.e. rhythm) is by using everyday objects found in the home or classroom. Items like small pots and pans, pot covers, metal ladles, wooden spoons, salt & pepper shakers, glass bottles filled with varying amounts of water, bubble wrap, pencils, pens, rulers, etc. can be used to create various sounds.
  • Let them try out different percussion and tuned instruments like bells, drums, maracas or triangles. Allow each child to play with the instruments and let them explore different ways of producing sounds using it.
  • Another fun activity for kids is to create their own musical instruments out of recycled materials. For example, when my daughter was in Kindergarten she made a small guitar out of empty tissue boxes and rubber bands. You can also create a shaker by filling an empty container with uncooked beans or rice. This activity not only fosters musical learning but also teaches the importance of recycling.
  • Let children listen to music from various periods and cultures. Afterward, ask them if they can identify at least one instrument they heard. Depending on the music they are listening to, you can extend this activity by combining it with movement. This will help children develop music appreciation and become more aware of the different types of music.
  • Another simple way to introduce musical instruments to young children is by providing them with coloring books. You can find musical instrument coloring books at bookstores or free printable coloring pages online.
