Conjugation Table for the Italian Verb "Capire"

Capire means "to understand," "to realize," "to grasp," or "to admit."

This verb belongs to the third-conjugation Italian verb group which includes all the verbs whose infinitive ends in -ire (like "dormire"). Many of the verbs belonging to this conjugation like finire (to finish), costruire (to build) or tradire (to betray) insert the particle -isc in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd persons of the singular and the 3rd person of the plural when conjugating the present indicative and the subjunctive:

 As a verb of third conjugation, "capire" takes a direct object: 

• Ho capito la lezione. – I understood the lesson. 
• Elisa capisce l'inglese.  – Elisa understands English.

This is a verb that is widely used in the Italian language because it has what we could call "additional cultural value." People often use it in the past participle form "capito/ ho capito" as an add-on into their affirmative response. Think of a phone conversation where you want to reassure someone that you understood what you have to do and that you're on the task that's required of you: 

• Va bene, ti porto i libri...si, si..capito, capito! – OK, I'll bring your books...yes, yes, got it.

In this sense you can add "capito" in lieu of "I know," "I understand," "I hear what you're saying," and any other similar sentences:

• Possiamo prendere il treno un po' piú tardi, capito? – We can get a later train, understood?
