Founded in 1883, Jacksonville State University is a public university located a little over an hour northeast of Birmingham. The university has a 20 to 1 student / faculty ratio, and programs in business, nursing, criminal justice and education are most popular among undergraduates. Students can choose from over 100 student organizations including an active fraternity and sorority system, and the school's "Marching Southerners" marching band has a strong reputation. On the athletic front, the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks compete in the NCAA Division I Ohio Valley Conference.
