James Porter is a former writer for ThoughtCo specializing in bass guitar tutorials, music lessons, and the basics of guitar playing. Porter has worked as a freelance journalist for local publications in Washington state since 2010, covering topics related to music including reviews of area band performances and guides on playing guitar. 

Porter has been playing bass since the age of eleven in a variety of settings and styles, from string orchestras to jazz bands to pop quartets. Currently, you can see him wielding the bass guitar around Washington state with the band Locust Street Taxi.


James Porter graduated from Port Townsend High School in 2009 and spent several years touring with small, local bands while writing metal and rock show reviews for local papers, zines, and online blogs.
