Get Familiar With the Jeep Gladiator Concept Truck

Unless you count the 2011 Jeep Mopar Kit, Jeep hasn't produced a bonafide truck since 1992. It remains solidly in sport utility vehicle territory. Which is why when Jeep manufacturer Chrysler revealed its Gladiator concept truck at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2005, fans nostalgic for the days of the Willy, Commando, Scrambler, and, yes, Gladiator, were over the moon.

But the Gladiator concept truck, based on the rough and tumble Jeep trucks that were produced from 1963 to 1987, was never intended to be produced and sold. It was simply a demonstration that the creatives at Chrysler were still capable of flexing their muscle in innovative ways. Still, if some form of the truck is actually ever produced, it would likely be one of the most popular Jeep truck models ever created.

Ancestry

Although the Gladiator, Jeep’s longest-running pickup series, was eventually simply just called the J-series, it will always be known by its original moniker to aficionados. It was first produced for the 1963 model year​ and didn't go out of production until 1987.

Body Style

The modern-day Gladiator concept truck has an open-air canvas roof, removable doors, and a fold-down windshield, all features that allow its occupants to feel in touch with the outdoors. An expandable bed and extra storage compartments enhance the Gladiator's ​cargo-carrying abilities. A side-mounted spare tire harkens back to its Army heritage.

Hustle and Muscle

The Gladiator truck is powered by a 2.8-liter, 4-cylinder common-rail turbo diesel engine that provides 163 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Rounding out that system is a 6-speed manual transmission and a part-time transfer case, allowing the driver to easily switch into four-wheel drive. This ability to tackle just about any terrain while still remaining stylish is one of the hallmarks of a Jeep.

Tires and Suspension

The truck's front and rear suspension are both multi-link designs, and coil over shocks are used at all four corners. The rear has dual, concentric springs, and the Gladiator has a 1,500-pound payload.

The Gladiator's ground clearance is 13.7 inches, with a break-over angle of 23.2 degrees, an approach angle of 47.6, and departure angle of 38.0 degrees. Front and rear tires measure 34 inches and are mounted on 18x8 inch wheels.

Interior

According to Jeep, the Gladiator concept is “a lifestyle pick-up with all the capability of the famed Wrangler.” To that end, it's both glamorous and functional. The interior of the Jeep Gladiator truck is what Jeep calls Armour Green with Dark Slate Gray accents. The seats are weatherproof, so the entire interior can be hosed out for easy maintenance. It is also equipped with a GPS navigation system.

Expandable Bed

Even buyers of luxury trucks want to be able to haul things around, and the Gladiator was designed to accommodate a variety of loads. Its four-foot-wide bed can be lengthened from the standard 5'8" to 6'8" when the midgate is expanded, and to 8'11" with the midgate expanded and the tailgate down.

Extra Storage

As high tech and futuristic as it is, the Jeep Gladiator concept truck is still a Jeep—first and foremost a functional piece of machinery. To that end, it has a driver-side cabin-storage access panel and a lockable storage panel in front of the rear wheel.
