Discussion of John Carroll University's Admissions Standards: John Carroll University, a private Catholic university in Ohio, has a relatively high acceptance rate, but applicants will still need to have solid grades and standardized test scores to be admitted. In the graph above, the blue and green data points were entered by students who were admitted. You can see that the great majority had high school GPAs of 2.7 (a "B-") or higher, combined SAT scores (RW+M) of 1000 or better, and ACT composite scores of 20 or better. Your chances of admission will be greater if your grades and standardized test scores are a bit above these lower numbers, but you'll also notice that a few students were admitted with numbers below the typical range. You can also see that many admitted students had strong "A" averages in high school. At the lower end of the graph, you'll notice that the red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) overlap with the green and the blue. Some students with grades and test scores similar to admitted students were not admitted. This type of seeming discrepancy is typical of schools like John Carroll that have with holistic admissions. Instead, the university wants to get to know each applicant as an individual, and the admissions folks will look for evidence of potential outside of numerical measures. The school's undergraduate admission website notes that the university's admission officers ask to questions of each applicant: "Will the student succeed at John Carroll?" and "How will the student contribute to the John Carroll community?" The university also works to admit a diverse student body, so economic, racial, religious, and geographical factors can play a roll in the process. Also, students who possess "significant talents," whether that be in athletics, music, leadership, or some other area.
