Johnson C. Smith University is a private, four-year college located on a 100-acre campus in Charlotte, North Carolina. The school's 1,600 students are supported by a 14 to 1 student/faculty ratio. JCSU has a host of student clubs and organizations, and is a member of the NCAA Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA). JCSU's men’s and women’s basketball teams have won CIAA championships. JCSU is the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to have every student receive a laptop computer.

It is also the fourth most wired campus in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report. JCSU makes a point to give back to the community as shown by its program, PhasingUp to New Possibilities, designed to help support and ease the transition of those coming out of the foster care system. The university aims to provide mentors and opportunities for those in need.
