Kaplan ACT Test Prep

Learn about the ACT test prep options offered by Kaplan

There are a lot of ways to improve your ACT scores. Some are free, and at the other extreme you can pay thousands of dollars to contract with a private college counselor. In the list below, I present some of the most popular ACT test prep products by Kaplan, a long-time leader in the test prep industry. Kaplan now has sophisticated online delivery systems, so their services are available to students anyplace in the world that has an internet connection. If you prefer a brick and mortar classroom, Kaplan has a lot of those as well.

$0 - Practice Tests and Diagnostics

Kaplan has several options that can help you prepare for the ACT for free. You won't get any Kaplan coaching or personal instruction with these options, but you can assess your level of preparedness for the ACT. These products won't cost you a penny, but some will require you to create a user profile.

$20 - ACT 2016 Premier (book with DVD)

If you're a motivated and disciplined student, you can improve your ACT scores considerably without spending money on a test prep course. Kaplan's ACT Premier 2016-17 with DVD includes eight full-length practice tests with detailed answer explanations, tips and tricks for different question types, and access to lots of useful online resources. The book lists for $31.99, but you can often get it for around $20. Check it out here: Kaplan ACT Premier 2016-2017.

$299 - ACT On Demand Self-Paced Prep Course

ACT On Demand gives you the ultimate freedom to work on your ACT skills when it's most convenient for you. This popular course is less expensive than many other ACT classes on the market. The software creates a custom study plan based on how you perform on a diagnostic test. With this product you'll have access to well over a thousand practice questions, guidance and strategies for solving different types of questions, on-demand video instruction, progress and homework tracking, and four full-length proctored tests. One nice feature of Kaplan's courses is that you'll get your money back if your ACT scores don't improve.

$749 - ACT Classroom Online

The online Classroom version of ACT prep has the same features as the on-site version described below except you'll be working with your instructor online rather than in a classroom. This is a necessity if you live in a remote location, and it can appeal to others who simply prefer live online instruction to a traditional classroom environment. As with the on-site version, you'll get four proctored exams, six extra practice tests, over a thousand practice questions, a database of video tutorials, a custom study plan, progress tracking, 18 hours of live instruction with an instructor and teaching assistants, and a money-back guarantee if your scores don't improve.

$749 - Complete ACT Prep - On Site

Kaplan's self-paced course and ACT book are great for students who are self-motivated and highly disciplined. Many students work better with more structure. If you're in the latter group, the in-person SAT Prep course might be a good option. This is Kaplan's most popular course. You'll get 18 hours of instruction at a Kaplan Center, two in-person proctored tests, two online proctored tests, six extra practice tests, progress and performance tracking, a customized study plan, numerous online videos, and well over a thousand practice questions. As with the other courses, you'll get your money back if your scores don't go up.

$1099 - Unlimited Prep (PSAT, SAT & ACT)

With a thousand dollar price tag, College Prep Advantage is a significant investment (although much less than you'd typically pay for any kind of private tutoring). If the price is entirely outside of your budget, go back to options #1 and #2 and keep in mind that disciplined self-directed study can improve your scores as well as any prep course. If the price isn't a barrier, this class can be a good choice for sophomores and rising juniors who are serious about getting the types of PSAT, SAT and ACT scores they'll need to win scholarships and get into some of the country's most selective colleges.

It's easy to overlook the PSAT part of this product because the SAT and ACT matter so much more in the actual admissions decision. However, an investment in PSAT prep can pay you back -- the exam is used to qualify students for National Merit Scholarships, and many colleges use National Merit results to award institutional scholarships. College Prep Advantage comes with nine hours of Classroom Anywhere instruction for the PSAT as well as two proctored exams.

College Prep Advantage also comes with the full $749 ACT Classroom package and the $749 SAT Classroom package. Each of those courses has numerous proctored and unproctored exams. You'll get the $299 Math Fundamentals course, customized study plans for all three exams, a library of online instructional videos, thousands of practice questions, and progress and performance tracking.

If you're a senior looking to do some last minute prep to bump up your ACT score, don't invest in Unlimited Prep. The course makes much more sense if you're early in your high school career because you get unlimited test prep into your senior year. The $1499 price tag isn't pocket change, but it isn't unreasonable if viewed as a multi-exam, multi-year investment.
