Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo were lovers and serial killers who pleasured themselves by torturing and killing young girls, including Karla's 15-year-old sister on Christmas night. Now Homolka is free after a short 12-year prison sentence.

On December 23, 1990, at a Christmas party at the Homolka family home, Bernardo and Homolka served Homolka's 15-year-old sister Tammy alcoholic drinks spiked with Halcyon. After family members retired, the two took Tammy to the basement and Homolka held a cloth soaked in Halothane to Tammy's mouth. Once Tammy was unconscious the couple raped her. During the rape Tammy began choking on her own vomit and ultimately died. The drugs in Tammy's system went undetected and her death was ruled an accident.

Karla eventually confessed her involvement in her sister's death in a letter she wrote to her parents. For Tammy's death, Homolka received and additional two-year prison sentence on top of the 10-year-sentence she received in exchange for her complete disclosure of the couple's crimes.

Tammy Homolka is buried at the Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines, not far from her parent's home.

Homolka and Bernardo married on June 29, 1991 in an elaborate wedding held at the Niagara-on-the-Lake church. Bernardo was in control of the wedding plans, which included the two riding in a white horse-drawn carriage with the bride dressed in an expensive white gown.

On the day of the wedding, the cement-encased body of Leslie Mahaffy was found in a lake. She had been tortured, raped, murdered and disposed of by the happy newlyweds.

Leslie Mahaffy

On June 15, 1991, Paul Bernardo kidnapped Leslie Mahaffy and brought her to the couple's home. Bernardo and Karla Homolka repeatedly raped Mahaffy over a course of several days, videotaping many of the assaults. They eventually killed Mahaffy, cut her body into pieces, encased the pieces in cement, and threw the cement in a lake. On June 29 Mahaffy's remains were found by a couple canoeing on the lake.

According to Bernardo's attorney Tony Bryant, Bernardo claimed that it was Homolka who insisted Mahaffy be murdered because during one of the rapes her blindfold fell off and Homolka was afraid of being recognized. Bernardo said his partner's original plan was to murder Mahaffy by injecting air bubbles into her bloodstream.

A witness to the kidnapping of Kristen French contacted police with a description of the car suspected to have been used during the assault. The witness, unable to identify the car make, selected a white Camaro as the closest to the car she saw. As a result, the billboard was put up by the police with a Camaro pictured. Bernardo actually drove a Nissan, which looked nothing like the Camaro.

The couple brought French to their home and for several days videotaped their acts of humiliating, torturing and sexually abusing her before killing her right before the couple left for Easter Sunday dinner with Homolka's family. Her body was later found in a ditch.

For her participation in the killing, Homolka received a mere 10-year prison sentence after agreeing to testify against her husband.

The Tables Turn on Homolka Bruised Face of Rapist and Killer Karla Homolka. Police Evidence

In January 1993, Karla Homolka separated from Paul Bernardo because of the physical abuse that he subjected her to from the summer of 1992. His attacks had become increasingly ferocious, resulting in Homolka being hospitalized. She left him and moved in with friends of her sister, one of whom was a police officer. Soon after, police began to close in on Bernardo as the Scarborough Rapist, and Homolka began confessing.

A plea bargain was arranged and Homolka agreed to disclose all crimes the couple committed and testify against her husband. After the agreement was made tapes were found at the couple's home which clearly showed Homolka receiving pleasure from victimizing the young girls, including her own sister. Homolka's stand that she was also a victim of Bernardo was no longer credible, but the plea bargain was sealed. This plea bargain received much public criticism.

On July 04, 2005, Homolka was released from prison.
