We Are Here On Earth to Receive Physical Bodies and Learn How to Control Them

Mortal life is part of Heavenly Father's great Plan of Salvation, sometimes called the Plan of Happiness. We are alive for a purpose and we are expected to put our mortality to good use.

To Obtain a Physical Body

In the Premortal Existence we existed as spirits and did not have a physical body. A large part of God's plan, explained in The Creation, the Fall, and Birth was for us, God's spirit children, to obtain a physical body.

Being born on earth and receiving our individual bodies is vital to our exaltation. Without a physical body we cannot progress; we cannot become as our Father in Heaven. This is what God wants for us, He wants us to progress and return to live with Him. We learn this in the Book of Moses.

But Satan and his followers, who rebelled against God, did not receive physical bodies. They will never receive physical bodies. As a result, they will never progress. Their progress has stopped.

We Are Here So We Can Become Like God

In order to become like our Father in Heaven we must first understand who He is. We can accomplish this through several means:

The prophet Joseph Smith said:

If you wish to go where God is, you must be like God, or possess the principles which God possesses, for if we are not drawing towards God in principle, we are going from Him and drawing towards the devil.

Heavenly Father wants us to become like Him so that we can return to live with Him after we die.

We are Here to Be Tried and Tested

When we are born on earth our spirits pass through a veil of forgetfulness, called the veil, and we are unable to remember our premortal existence. This block on our memory is a necessary part of mortality.

It allows us to truly be tested, to see if we will choose good over evil.

We are here to learn how to make righteous choices and to demonstrate our willingness to make righteous choices.

Mortality is the time for us to prepare to meet God. It is during this time that we must overcome temptations, face trials, and prove ourselves faithful servants. This principle is taught in the Book of Abraham.

This is a major reason why we are here on earth. See Trials of our Faith and Temptations and Trials to learn more about our responsibilities while here in mortality.

We are Here to Develop Faith in Jesus Christ

Faith in Jesus Christ is the first principle of the gospel. It is the most basic principle because it is necessary to our salvation. Developing faith in Jesus takes constant study, prayer, and a desire to follow His teachings. The apostle Paul taught about the necessity of having faith in Christ.

Although a simple concept, developing faith in Jesus Christ can take our entire lives and even then we may not completely master it.

We are Here to Establish Eternal Family Relationships:

In the beginning Heavenly Father gave Eve to Adam and commanded them to have children. This family unit, as established by God, was designed to give us the experiences we need in order to become heavenly parents in the eternities.

Through obedience to God's commandments we can have an eternal family.

In the proclamation on the family,  the First Presidency and 12 Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaim that:

... marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.

The traditional family is at the core of Heavenly Father's plan for us. We are here to create families by having children and performing our responsibilities of mortality. This is in preparation for our eternal responsibilities in families.
