The Spanish verb limpiar can be translated as "to clean," "to mop," or "to wipe off," depending on the method of cleaning. Similarly, it can be used when referring to actions such as tidying up, clearing out, or removing clutter. It can also be used figuratively, as in clearing or cleaning up someone's reputation. 

Below you'll find tables with the conjugations for the simple tenses of limpiar: present, preterite, imperfect, future, periphrastic future, and conditional indicative; present and imperfect subjunctive; and the imperative. Also listed are the gerund and past participle, which are used in the compound tenses.

Limpiar Conjugation

Despite having the vowel i immediately before the -ar ending, limpiar is conjugated regularly. You can use limpiar as a model for other verbs ending in -iar, such as cambiar (to change), copiar (to copy), odiar (to hate), and silenciar (to silence).

Present Indicative Tense of Limpiar

Yo limpio I clean Yo limpio la cocina.
Tú limpias You clean Tú limpias la pecera.
Usted/él/ella limpia You/he/she cleans Usted limpia el pizarrón de la clase.
Nosotros limpiamos We clean Nosotros limpiamos las ventanas.
Vosotros limpiáis You clean Vosotros limpiáis la computadora.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas limpian You/they clean Ellas limpian los dientes del perro.

Limpiar Preterite

The preterite is the simple past tense of Spanish, which is usually translated as the English "-ed" verbs.

Yo limpié I cleaned Yo limpié la cocina.
Tú limpiaste You cleaned Tú limpiaste la pecera.
Usted/él/ella limpió You/he/she cleaned Usted limpió el pizarrón de la clase.
Nosotros limpiamos We cleaned Nosotros limpiamos las ventanas.
Vosotros limpiasteis You cleaned Vosotros limpiasteis la computadora.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas limpiaron You/they cleaned Ellas limpiaron los dientes del perro.

Imperfect Indicative Form of Limpiar

The imperfect tense is used for talking about actions that took place over an indefinite period of time. It is equivalent to the English phrases "used to clean" or "was cleaning."

Yo limpiaba I used to clean Yo limpiaba la cocina.
Tú limpiabas You used to clean Tú limpiabas la pecera.
Usted/él/ella limpiaba You/he/she used to clean Usted limpiaba el pizarrón de la clase.
Nosotros limpiábamos We used to clean Nosotros limpiábamos las ventanas.
Vosotros limpiabais You used to clean Vosotros limpiabais la computadora.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas limpiaban You/they use to clean Ellas limpiaban los dientes del perro.

Limpiar Future Tense

Yo limpiaré I will clean Yo limpiaré la cocina.
Tú limpiarás You will clean Tú limpiarás la pecera.
Usted/él/ella limpiará You/he/she will clean Usted limpiará el pizarrón de la clase.
Nosotros limpiaremos We will clean Nosotros limpiaremos las ventanas.
Vosotros limpiaréis You will clean Vosotros limpiaréis la computadora.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas limpiarán You/they will clean Ellas limpiarán los dientes del perro.

Periphrastic Future of Limpiar

The periphrastic future is more informal than the simple future tense conjugated above. It is the equivalent of "going to," and as in English, this form of referring to the future in some areas has replaced the standard future tense in everyday speech.

Yo voy a limpiar I am going to clean Yo voy a limpiar la cocina.
Tú vas a limpiar You are going to clean Tú vas a limpiar la pecera.
Usted/él/ella va a limpiar You/he/she is going to clean Usted va a limpiar el pizarrón de la clase.
Nosotros vamos a limpiar We are going to clean Nosotros vamos a limpiar las ventanas.
Vosotros vais a limpiar You are going to clean Vosotros vais a limpiar la computadora.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas van a limpiar You/they are going to clean Ellas van a limpiar los dientes del perro.

Present Progressive/Gerund Form of Limpiar

Although the Spanish gerund is the equivalent of "-ing" verbs in English, it cannot be used as a noun. It is used to form the progressive or continuous tenses.

Gerund of Limpiar: está limpiando

is cleaning -> Usted está limpiando el pizarrón de la clase.

Past Participle of Limpiar

Participle of Limpiar: ha limpiado

has cleaned -> Usted ha limpiado el pizarrón de la clase.

Conditional Form of Limpiar

As its name suggests, the conditional tense is used for actions that depend on some condition being met. It is usually the equivalent of the "would + verb" form in English.

Yo limpiaría I would clean Yo limpiaría la cocina, pero hay demasiada basura.
Tú limpiarías You would clean Tú limpiarías la pecera si fuera tuya.
Usted/él/ella limpiaría You/he/she would clean Usted limpiaría el pizarrón de la clase si fuera su turno.
Nosotros limpiaríamos We would clean Nosotros limpiaríamos las ventanas, pero no tenemos detergente.
Vosotros limpiaríais You would clean Vosotros limpiaríais la computadora si tuvierais el software.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas limpiarían You/they would clean Ellas limpiarían los dientes del perro, pero necesitan un cepillo.

Present Subjunctive of Limpiar

The present subjunctive is used in situations of doubt, desire, or emotion, and is generally subjective

Limpiar Imperfect Subjunctive Forms

These two forms of the imperfect subjunctive usually have the same meaning and usage. The first option is used more often.

Option 1

Que yo limpiara That I cleaned Alicia quería que yo limpiara la cocina.
Que tú limpiaras That you cleaned Eduardo pidió que tú limpiaras la pecera.
Que usted/él/ella limpiara That you/he/she cleaned La maestra quería que usted limpiara el pizarrón de la clase.
Que nosotros limpiáramos That we cleaned Mamá quería que nosotros limpiáramos las ventanas.
Que vosotros limpiarais That you cleaned Camila quería que vosotros limpiarais la computadora.
Que ustedes/ellos/ellas limpiaran That you/they cleaned Tomás quería que ellas limpiaran los dientes del perro.
