Founded as a private institution in 1854, it was the first historically Black university in the country. The rural 422-acre campus is immersed in the rolling hills and woods of southeast Pennsylvania, 55 miles north of Baltimore and 45 miles outside of Philadelphia, where the university also has a satellite center for graduate studies. Lincoln has a student faculty ratio of 14 to 1 and strong academic offerings, with 23 undergraduate majors in areas of study including mass communication, biology and health, physical education and recreation.
