While the topic of an unconditional basic income (=Bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen, UBI) for all citizens of Germany is being discussed for quite a few years now there in one man tired of waiting for the politicians to decide whether giving people money without requiring to work for it and who is taking things in his own haends by organizing a monthly lottery. There’s only one price and participating in the lottery costs absolutely nothing.

That man is Michael Bohmeyer from Berlin and his crowdfunding project has already helped to financiate unconditional basic incomes of 1000€ for twelve months for seven people with the eigth income on the way.

It's completely free

The fantastic thing about this lottery is not only that it doesn’t cost anything to participate, but mainly that it is truly unconditional. That means even you and your children could participate if you knew how. Unfortunately the homepage is only in German - what a motivation to push your German learning a bit - but I will try to summarize the main points below.

The question on everyone’s mind is what such an income would do to people. Would they stop working and become dependant or would they enjoy the freedom of not having to work that much and develop new ideas or simply work with a calmer mind? Imagine knowing that if you lost your job you’d not have to worry about your survival anymore.

Wouldn’t you enjoy your daily chore more? Maybe most of us would even be more productive? It is a fascinating experiment and although it’s only for one year it might provide us with invaluable insights into how our society might look like in the not too far away future.

What would you do with an UBI?

Try to understand this page where participants in the lottery have written down, what they would do with their new income.

How about you? What would you do if you won? Why not using it to actually travel there, if you are not an expat already?

There are some "conditions"

  • You’d have to register here and enter your email address but no further details until you win. You’d have to install a browser add on called crowdbar that the organizers use to raise funds. A certain percentage of your purchase at a variety of online shops goes to the project to raise money for the next income. Alternatively you can order a so called crowd card that works like most cash-back cards but most likely only in Germany. Yet, you wouldn’t have to purchase anything neither with the bar nor the card. They just serve as your token to be able to participate in the lottery.
  • You will only receive your ticket-number the night before or latest that same day of the draw but they will send you an email just in time to remind you of the big day.
  • Your child can only participate with your help as participants need to be 18 years old, which is the legal age for pretty much anything in this country. You’d have to wait until the night before the draw and then go to your profile to add your child to your profile.
  • I’m not sure though whether you’d have to live in Germany to use the income but they stress the fact that it’s unconditional pretty much, so that shouldn’t be a condition.

Go for it - Viel Glück

So, what’s holding you back? Register and maybe you are the next lucky winner and can use the money to live a few months in Germany or invest it in your German language tuition.

I cross my fingers or I press my thumbs as we would say in Germany - Ich drücke Dir die Daumen - and hope to hear good news from you soon.
