Here are some science costume ideas for Halloween or costume parties. Keep in mind, you don't need to go out and buy items for a mad scientist costume! You can cut an old white t-shirt up the middle to make a lab coat. Any glasses will do for safety goggles. Tape the bridge of the glasses for a crazy look. Craft a bow tie from colored paper. Put on a pair of gloves from the kitchen. You can also make radiation badges or biohazard symbols from paper. Your favorite crazy hairstyle conveys madness. Props could include a calculator, dissected stuffed animal, slime, glass of bubbling ooze... you get the picture. Create a Mad Scientist Costume The key to a quick mad scientist costume is glasses or goggles, hair gel or a wig, a lab coat (or white shirt), and glassware. Rich Legg / Getty Images The key to duplicating this look is to mousse or spray your hair. Safety goggles or reading glasses are a plus, but the stand-out here is the guy's accessory: a flask of colored water containing a chunk of dry ice. If you don't have dry ice, you can get bubbles using an Alka-Seltzer tablet. While it's hard to find beakers outside of an actual lab, you may be able to find plastic beakers in the Halloween candy section. Create a Mad Scientist Costume Easy Science Halloween Costumes. Anne Helmenstine The mad scientist costume typically involves a lab coat and wild hair. A few props can add more science and more madness. The lab coat could be a t-shirt cut in the middle or an oversize-white button down shirt. Clip-on bow ties can be relatively inexpensive, but really all you need is a bow shape cut from construction paper and pinned to the shirt collar. Creepy Scientist Costume The key to making an extra-creepy mad scientist costume is to add an air of mystery. George Doyle, Getty Images To achieve this mad scientist look, get a mask from a drug store or construction store. Add a protective plastic face mask. You can go with a rain coat or even a white trashbag for the protective clothing. If you want to appear truly insane, add a splash of red paint to give the illusion of blood. Another option is slime, especially if it's radioactive greenish-yellow. Yet another option is to sprinkle your costume with glow-in-the-dark (phosphorescent) paint. Easy Scientist Halloween Costume Scientists wear lab coats. B2M Productions, Getty Images What makes a great scientist Halloween costume? It's as simple as wearing a lab coat. Goggles, gloves, or a magnifying glass are nice accessories to add to this Halloween costume. While protective googles from a college bookstore can break the bank, you can find inexpensive versions at building supply stores and sometimes at dollar stores. Mad Scientist Halloween Costume Mad scientists find humor in the strangest places. Comstock, Getty Images You can make a mad scientist Halloween costume by wearing a bow tie and lab coat and either doing something crazy with your hair or else wearing a wig. Add a maniacal laugh and you're set! Hair options include simply mussing hair using mousse, adding temporary color, or placing bizarre ornaments (like plastic bugs or frogs). A wig is also a good choice, if you have one. Scientist Halloween Costume You can make a science costume for Halloween. It's easy and inexpensive. It's also way cool. Anne Helmenstine Break out Mom's make-up to accentuate eyebrows. Eyeliner and lipstick, especially in unusual colors, work too. For a futuristic look, use silver, gold, or any other metallic shade. Simple Chemist Costume Safety googles are used in chemistry labs. Ryan McVay, Getty Images A pair of goggles is enough to identify you as a chemist for a simple chemist costume. You can pick up inexpensive lab safety goggles at a dollar general store. They are also found in many kids' science kits. Add a white t-shirt and some attitude and call it good! Scientist Costume David is wearing an actual lab coat from a real lab, but you can get a similar effect by cutting a white t-shirt up the center. I printed a lab safety sign and stuck it to his coat. Reading glasses look geeky like goggles, but are easier to find. Anne Helmenstine Here's an easy scientist costume that you can make from household materials. Everything for this outfit was already on hand. Evil Genius Costume Looking the part of Evil Genius is mainly about hair and eyebrows, but adding a bit of science increases both the 'evil' and 'genius' aspects of the costume. Anne Helmenstine "Evil" is all about the eyebrows and facial expression. Either look maniacally happy or like you're hatching an evil plot. Goofy Mad Scientist The combination of wild orange hair and polka dot bow tie makes this scientist look particularly mad. Add some glasses and a lab coat and you're all set!. Ffoto Fictions, Getty Images A goofy mad scientist might have over-sized shoes, a crazy-colored wig, googly glasses, and bushy eyebrows.
