Discussion of MICA's Admissions Standards:

MICA, Maryland Institute College of Art, has selective admissions. Roughly half of all applicants will get in. As an art school, MICA places heavy emphasis on an applicant's portfolio, but both grades and test scores are also important. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent students who were accepted. Most had SAT scores of 1050 or higher (RW+M), an ACT composite score of 20 or higher, and a high school average of a "B" or better. Many successful applicants are "A" students.

Note that there are a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) mixed in with the green and blue in the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that were on target for MICA did not get get in. Note also that a few students were accepted with test scores and grades a bit below the norm. This is because MICA has holistic admissions and will be looking for a strong application essay, meaningful extracurricular activities, and positive letters of recommendation. Most important is an impressive portfolio of artwork. All applicants are required to submit a digital portfolio of 12 to 20 pieces of their artwork.
