May is one of the most beautiful months of the year in the Northern Hemispherer. Usually the snow and ice are gone and the hot temperatures haven't arrived. The first garden begins to sprout in May, the wild flowers are blooming and the trees and grasses have turned green. Many birds have built their nests, and mother birds are sitting on the eggs, which will hatch very soon.

The month May was named for the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May.

Conversely, the Roman poet Ovid provides a second etymology, in which he says that the month of May is named for the maiores, Latin for "elders."

Gemini is the zodiac sign for this month and symbolizes success and love. It is also considered an air sign, and is one of four mutable signs. Gemini has been closely associated with the planet Mercury and is considered to be ruled by it.
