6 Things To Know About the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet

1
The roof is clearly the star of the show.

The primary thing distinguishing the C-Class Cabriolet from the C-Class Coupe is, obviously, the roof. Unlike the other versions of the C-Class, if you cram it all in the trunk you haven't irreparably ruined your car. That's cool! Mercedes decided on a classic fabric top over the supposedly swankier folding hard top on account of weight and trunk space. You don't have to choose between cruising top down up the Pacific Coast Highway and having something to wear when you get to San Francisco.

The top is available in black, brown, dark red, and navy with a choice of black, porcelain, and "crystal grey" interior liners.

Just because it's old school doesn't mean it's low tech.

The roof isn't just some plain Jane's basic soft top for serfs, of course. This roof is made of several layers of acoustic fabric that's designed to reduce wind noise as much as possible at highway speed, in order to keep the conversation going. There's little more annoying than not being able to hear your passenger.

It also opens and closes in under 20 seconds at speeds up to 31 miles per hour. So you can drop that top when you need to do something embarrassing to your kid in front of his friends without slowing down in most school zones.

The interior is similar to the sedan's, but there are a few unique touches.

The C-Cabriolet is very concerned with keeping you warm, so you'll be able to enjoy the titular feature as often as possible, and that's why it can be fitted with "heat reflecting leather." Most C-Classes already come equipped with heated seats, and if this leather's heat reflection does work well it could be cause for the driver's back to become horribly swampy in the summer. This strikes me as a terrible idea. Don't risk the summer days in an attempt to make a few cold ones more fun... something about a baby and bathwater...

In addition to the weird leather, the C-Cabriolet offers Mercedes-Benz's "Air Scarf" which is a vent in the seat that gently blows warm air onto your neck, so you can enjoy the cool night air without getting a chill. #FirstWorldProblemSolved

Matching the Air Scarf is an Air Cap, which is a sheet of warm air that flows out of the top of the windshield, thus mixing with the cool night air to create a more bearable temperature for your delicate scalp. This influx of warmer air isn't undercut by horrid wind from the back of the car either, as there is a wind blocker that rises up behind the rear passengers. #FirstWorldProblemEliminated

AMG has not overlooked the C-Cab

Just like the other C-Class bodystyles, the base model of the cabriolet is a 241 horsepower, 273 ft-lb of torque, turbo I4-powered C300 witch can be had with the rear wheels driven or with Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Also coming at launch is a Mercedes-AMG C43 with all the same features as the C43 Coupe and the soon-to-be-renamed C450 AMG Sport Line.

AMG aficionados wanting the full-calorie AMG experience will be happy to hear that a full C63 version is forthcoming. That should really mess up your hair.

The platform was built for this.

One problem that plagues many drop-tops is that the chassis gets a bit wobbly when the structure of the roof is removed. This results in less predictable handling, and a generally worse driving experience. This can at least be mitigated by the engineers when they design the platform to accommodate a convertible variant from conception. At Mercedes-Benz, they did, so the C-Class Cabriolet retains most of the chassis stiffness of the sedan and coupe. I'm happy it got the same treatment as the S-Class Cabriolet

If only it got delivered on the Renntransporter.
