Every state serves their population somewhat differently when it comes to education and schools. Much of the power to govern and fund such is on the state and local level, with the Federal Government having relatively minimal oversight on the topic. This almost ensures that there are fifty-one different ways education and schools in the United States are being governed. Highly debated education related policy on topics such as teacher tenure, charter schools, school vouchers, standardized testing, state adopted standards, and teacher evaluations come with varying spins according to which state you are in.

This variance almost ensures that a student in one state is receiving a different education than similar students in surrounding states.  These differences can make it extremely difficult to compare the quality of education between the states accurately.  There are many factors that play a role in educational quality.  Isolating how state policy impacts these factors is virtually impossible.  Even still, there are certain comparable data sets in which one can draw a fair conclusion.  This profile of education and schools focuses on the state of Michigan.
