Discussion of Michigan Tech's Admissions Standards:

Michigan Technological University is a public research university located in Houghton, Michigan, a town in the Upper Penisula. The university is moderately selective, and about a quarter of applicants will not get in. Successful applicants will need solid grades and standardized test scores (most have grades and ACT scores that are above average). In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent students who won admission. Most had SAT scores (RW+M) of 1050 or higher, an ACT composite of 21 or higher, and a high school average of a "B" or better. Grades and test scores above these lower ranges will improve your chances, and you can see that many admitted students had grades in the "A" range.

Admission to Michigan Tech is determined largely by your academic record and your standardized test scores. The university does not require an application essay or letters of recommendation. However, the university will consider these materials if you include them with your application. The rigor of your high school courses does matter, and those AP, IB and Honors courses can strengthen your application. Note that Michigan Tech's programs in Audio Production and Technology and Sound Design have additional application requirements such as short essays and examples of projects that demonstrate your interests and abilities.

Michigan Tech does not have an application deadline, but you'll improve your chances of admission by applying early before spaces in specific programs fill. The university recommends applying no later than January 15th.

One added perk to applying to Michigan Tech: It's free to apply!
