Mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and business administration are the most popular programs among undergraduates. Michigan Tech, one of Michigan's 15 public universities, is located in Houghton, a peaceful town on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan. The campus overlooks Portage Lake, and students will find many opportunities for outdoor recreation in the area. Many of Michigan Tech's engineering programs do well in national rankings, and as a state university the school represents an excellent educational value for in-state students. On the athletic front, the Michigan Tech Huskies compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (men's hockey competes in the Division I Western Collegiate Hockey Association).
