'Minute to Win It' Rapid Fire Game

You've likely already played some sort of game using the same method as Rapid Fire employs, even if it was just goofing around as a kid. In this Minute to Win It game you'll be using elastic bands to knock over empty pop cans. And yes, people played this on the show to win money.

The Goal

The goal of this game is to blast away six pop cans by slinging rubber bands at them. It's a great party game for kids, just make sure that those who aren't actively playing are kept well out of the line of fire. You don't want to be sending them home with injuries if you can help it.

Equipment Needed

You can pretty much guess what you'll need for this game already, but let's take a look at your supply list anyway. For Rapid Fire, you will need:

  • Six empty, clean, and dry pop cans
  • A bunch of elastic bands - it doesn't matter if they're all the same style or size
  • A bowl or container to hold the elastic bands
  • A table
  • A measuring tape
  • Masking tape, duct tape, string, or chalk to mark the foul line
  • A one-minute timer or stop watch

How to Set Up the Game

Setup is ridiculously easy. Place the table somewhere you're comfortable having elastic bands aimed towards (so, near the china cabinet is likely not the most strategic placement). Stack up the cans in a pyramid shape with three cans on the bottom, two on top of those, and then one on the very top.

Measure eight feet out from the table and mark the foul line on the floor with tape, string, or chalk depending on the surface you're marking and what you have available. Place the container of rubber bands on the floor near the foul line, and you're ready to play.

How to Play

Once you've got everything set up, stand behind the foul line near the container full of your elastic band projectiles. When the timer starts, reach down and grab one of the rubber bands. Using the well-known stretch and let go slingshot method, shoot the rubber band at the pop can pyramid. Your goal is to knock the whole thing down before the timer runs out. If you accomplish this you win the game.

The Rules

Even with a game this simple, there are rules that must be followed. They are:

  • You may only hold and shoot one rubber band at a time (no grabbing a handful from the bucket)
  • All six cans must be knocked right over in order to win

Tips and Tricks

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out a great strategy for this game: Aim for the bottom row. If the bottom of the pyramid falls, the top will go with it. Since it doesn't matter what order you knock the cans over in, this is the quickest way to destroy the tower.

If you want to make the game a little more difficult for older kids or grown up players, put the cans in a single row along with table with plenty of space between them. They'll still be required to knock over all of the cans, but it'll be a lot trickier to do so especially with a time limit. You can also set up tandem pyramids to allow several players to compete at one time.
