Discussion of Mississippi State's Admissions Standards:

About a third of applicants to Mississippi State will not get in. The admissions bar isn't overly high, but applicants will still need grades and test scores that are at least average or better. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent students who were admitted. Most had SAT scores of 950 or higher (RW+M), an ACT composite of 18 or higher, and a high school average of a "B-" or higher. Note that Mississippi State does not use the writing section of the ACT or SAT when making admission or scholarship decisions. Also note that Mississippi residents who fail to meet the entry standards of the university may still be admitted if the applicant successfully completes the school's summer developmental program. Admission to this program is based on more than grades and test scores—special talent and other nonacademic factors are taken into consideration.

When Mississippi State calculates your high school GPA, they will use only those courses that most relate to the skills necessary for college success. Specifically, they will calculate your GPA using your "College Preparatory Curriculum." This encompasses four units of English, three units of Math, Science and Social Studies, two units of advanced electives (such as foreign language, advanced world geography, or advanced science or math classes), one unit of Arts, and a half unit of technology.

Mississippi State, like all colleges and universities, will be impressed if you have successfully completed challenging college preparatory classes. Advanced Placement, IB, Honors, and dual enrollment courses can all help convince the university that you are prepared for college.
