Discussion of Montclair State's Admissions Standards:

Montclair State University in New Jersey is a moderately selective public university near New York City. To be admitted, students will need solid grades and standardized test scores. Over a quarter of all all applicants will not be admitted. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the great majority of students who got into Montclair State had GPAs of a 3.0 or better, an ACT composite score above 19, and a combined SAT score (RW+M) of above 1000. The chances for admission look best for students with grades above this lower range. SAT and ACT scores, on the other hand, aren't nearly as important as grades--as of the fall of 2015, Montclair State has test-optional admissions. If you aren't happy with your scores, you don't need to report them (but the university welcomes you to submit them, and they will be considered if you choose to do so; use the graph above to determine whether or not your scores are likely to strengthen your application).

In the middle of the graph, you can see that red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) overlap with the blue and green. This means that some students who seemed to be on target for admission did not get in. On the flip side, some students were accepted with grades below the norm. Montclair State University has holistic admissions, so the admissions officers are evaluating students based on more than numerical data. Your personal essay, extracurricular activities, and letter of recommendation all play a role in the admissions process. Moreover, students applying to programs in fine arts, performing arts, and communication studies and broadcasting will need to complete an interview, audition, or portfolio review.

Your academic record is going to be the most important part of your Montclair State application. The university wants to see students take 4 units of English, 3 unites of math, two units of a foreign language, a laboratory science, and social sciences, and three additional units in any of these areas. You'll want to challenge yourself in high school, and Montclair State will be impressed if you take math beyond algebra II, a lab science beyond chemistry, and additional years of a language. Also, Advanced Placement, IB, Honors, and dual enrollment courses will all help to demonstrate your college readiness.
