Auto Fabrica is an ultra-low volume British bike building outfit that constructs some seriously elegant custom motorcycles. Producing between 8 and 12 bikes per year, the brotherly team of Bujar and Gazmend Muharremi use their London-based headquarters to transform conventional bikes into two-wheeled works of art.

These two particular motorcycles-- Type 6 and Type 8-- are noteworthy not only because of their exhaustive builds (it took 6 months to create each), but because they are so minimally designed and constructed. Largely inspired by the works of automotive genius Ettore Bugatti, the brothers use the "Type" nomenclature to describe each of their creations, just like Mr. Bugatti did.

Type 6 started life as a 1979 Yamaha XS650, and the Type 8 was originally a 1981 Honda CX500. Let's take a closer look at these two beautifully minimalistic bikes.

Here's a profile view of the Type 6. Take a close look at the spot behind the fuel tank and the saddle, and you'll see a small scalloped tunnel. This spot was the aesthetic inspiration for the whole bike, and was originally intended to serve as a ram air intake for the engine. However, the design proved more garish than originally intended, so the feature was reduced to this very slight visual gesture. To preserve the streamlined look, the tank and the seat base were made by hand-rolling a manually formed piece of aluminum.

While some of the components are visually identifiable from the donor bike, elements of the motorcycles were uniquely handmade. For instance, the stainless steel handle bars, levers, and fork covers on the Type 6 were all created by the builders. The engine was rebuilt using 0.5-oversize pistons, and all castings and aluminum components were water blasted to a matte finish.

Bringing together their unique skills enabled the brothers to carve a niche for themselves that is miles apart from the typical fare created by custom builders. But before any bike part is even taken to hand, Bujar and his team spend quite a bit of time on the design, beginning with hand-sketching and moving to Photoshop renderings to make a virtual bike before the manual labor of love begins.

The Auto Fabrica Type 8 is based on a 1981 Honda CX500, and uses high stainless steel exhaust pipes to create an entirely different look from the Type 6. The brothers' work is informed by iconic creations of 20th century design. "“We began by taking a step back from modern-day technologies and really looking into what is a beautiful machine,” they say. “Time and time again we came to the same conclusions: the vehicles considered the most beautiful and expensive were the cars and bikes from the golden eras between 1910 and the 1980s.”

The self-taught brothers do their own panel-beating and metal-forming. Though the company was officially formed in 2013, their business was a long time coming before that. The difficulty in creating these bikes comes from the fact that many of these techniques are "lost" to modern artisans-- that is, the skill set is so specific that it takes a bit of trial and error to arrive at the proper way to do things.

Bringing together their unique skills enabled the brothers to carve a niche for themselves that is miles apart from the typical fare created by custom builders. As you might imagine, there's quite a bit of preparation that goes into imagining and building these well thought-out creations. Bujar Muharremi's team starts with hand sketches, then creates Photoshop renderings to conceive the bike in a virtual space before the difficult physical work begins.

In the case of the Type 6 and the Type 8, these two custom creations are being displayed at the M.A.DGallery in Geneva, Switzerland, where high-end custom watch creator Max Busser uses a collaborative creative environment to celebrate all forms of kinetic art. If you're interested in owning one or both of these painstakingly built bikes, they are available for sale at 80,000 CHF (or about $83,300 USD, at today's conversion rates.
